Public DNS Servers

Public DNS servers are a great resource when you are somewhere that does not have a reliable DNS server.  We were recently at a trade show and needed DNS, but had no idea what we might see when we got there.  So I just set it up with a public DNS.

There are lots of Public DNS servers out there including the about.com Public DNS Server List list , but I just decided to go with Google’s DNS Servers.

The Google Public DNS IP addresses (IPv4) are as follows:

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

The Google Public DNS IPv6 addresses are as follows:

  • 2001:4860:4860::8888
  • 2001:4860:4860::8844

Google also has an excellent document on Using Google Public DNS for those who need extra help setting it up.

The Public DNS Servers are a great resource for the Internet Community and I thank them for making them freely available.
